Empowering Nurses at the Bedside and in Business

That Little Voice In Your Head

No, you are not crazy. We all have two different little voices in our heads.  One is the loud, negative voice that tells us we’re no good, and that questions how can you be a successful nurse, why do you deserve to be successful?

But there’s also that quieter, softer voice supporting you saying, “You CAN do this!”  “You CAN be successful!”  “You have everything it takes!”

Which voice do you listen to?

There’s a Native American Indian story about a black wolf and a white wolf.  We have inside of us both a white and black wolf.  The black wolf is the evil one, encouraging you to do things that are not good for you (like eating junk food or you don’t need to work on your business today!  You know the one).  The white wolf is the one supporting, loving and nurturing you as well as holding your vision.  The white wolf is full of peace, joy, love, harmony, kindness and empathy.

The two wolves are in conflict with each other because they say opposite things.  Which wolf wins?  The answer is easy: it’s the one that you feed!  You can choose the voice of the peaceful one or the one in conflict.

Are you listening to your black wolf or your white wolf?  Are you feeding your white wolf by allowing it to nurture, love and support you?  Are you taking time for yourself and caring for yourself instead of everyone else? Are you saying, “No” when you want to?  I hope so because, after all, self-love is most important.

Or are you feeding your black wolf that encourages you not to do the things that you know you need to do to be a successful nurse? Like agreeing to work a million hours a week when you don’t want to or taking shortcuts in your practice.

When I make major decisions about things, I trust my gut.  If I get that butterfly feeling in my belly, then I act on it before my head (the black wolf) can talk me out of it.

I use this method for every major decision I have made in my life and it has not steered me wrong.  Are you listening to the white wolf or black wolf?  I would love to hear your comments below.
